Rising Average Salary and Millionaires in Singapore

The Manpower Ministry in Singapore published its latest labour market and salary survey which showed that the employers based in the country are expected to face increasing difficulty to hire new employees. This challenge is becoming more wide spread because of the strong recovery experienced by Singapore for the first half of 2011. As the economy in Singapore recovered along with the rest of the world from the depths of the credit crisis, many companies and businesses are able to take on more staff as they expand their operations. This led to record low unemployment rates and rising average salary within Singapore. With inflation worries on the horizon, companies are struggling with customers’ requests to maintain their prices while trying to keep their staff salary and material costs within control.

Referencing the latest statistics published by the government, the median wages are now 2700 SGD and the average pay check in Singapore is in the range of 4100 SGD. The government also encourages companies which can afford it and which expect to benefit from the economic recovery to provide greater amount of salary increments. The Singapore civil service, which is the largest employer in the country, is expected to take the lead in approving pay rises in the form of changes to the fixed pay or by increasing the variable bonus components. It was also announced that the salary of the world’s highest paid President will increase by 25% to 4.3 million SGD in 2011.

The improving salary scale is expected to improve the fortunes of most workers in the different industries, from the fresh graduates to the seasoned employee still reeling from the shock of the previous financial crisis. In fact, an industry survey of fresh graduates’ average starting pay scale projected that a degree graduate should be able to earn around 2400 SGD.

However, the biggest group of beneficiary appears to be the rich. In the latest BCG survey, Singapore has been identified as the country in the world with the largest proportion of millionaire households. Based on the results, almost 16% of households in Singapore comprises of millionaire households, beating Switzerland at number 2 and Qatar at number 3.

Companies are energy strategy and brand marketing as oil and water?

Periodically, an oil company is experiencing an environmental catastrophe of disastrous proportions. As demonstrated by the oil spill in the Gulf in recent years, the Exxon Valdez spill and a host of other eco-catastrophe, these tragic events are an occupational hazard of the energy industry. In theory there should be no surprise – like the earthquake in California could be a shock. Of course, a fairly large earthquake in Los Angeles will generate news coverage of the country.
